H2O Inc. was founded in 1980 with the mission to provide a potable water solution for offshore oil and gas operators. In the past fresh water was shipped via supply vessels from a shore base to the platforms. Many times having a watermaker on board results in a reduction in the number of supply boat runs needed to a platform. This can result in significant cost savings to the operator.
The watermaker also gives operators the assurance that the water being produced is indeed potable. Shore base personnel have been known to pump diesel or other chemicals into water tanks not to mention that the hoses and transfer pumps are typically not rated for potable water use and may be used to transfer other chemicals.
Lastly, there is a convenience factor involved with having a watermaker onboard. In the late 1990's H2O was approached by a major oil and gas operator to rent watermakers for drilling projects where water based drilling muds were used. The use of water-based mud requires nearly 42,000 gallons (1000BBLs) of water per day. This represents nearly 350,000 pounds of additional cargo per day.
In mid 2000, H2O began to rent systems for use on floating hotels (floatels), which are often used to accommodate large construction crews. In recent years, the rental fleet has been used more and more by hydro blasting companies. Hydro-blasting replaces traditional sand blasting for preparing metal surfaces for paint. In 2010, H2O will begin to offer hydroblaster, storage tank and transfer pump rentals to support the offshore coatings market as well.
